Secret Lives

Secret Lives by Barbara Ardinger

Being of the male persuasion I had my doubts as to how much I would relate to and be drawn into a novel about a group of older women who follow Goddess traditions and teachings. After reading Secret Lives I now see that my doubts were wholly unfounded and that Barbara Ardinger has written a marvelous book that is engaging, heartwarming and even instructive if you are open to the spirit in which this novel was written. The grandmothers, the daughters and the granddaughters of this novel are well drawn characters that personify the struggles that women in general face living in a world that still sees them as worth less than their male counterparts but in particular it also delves into the struggles that women face who follow a spiritual path that does not adhere to a patriarchal model that has come to dominate this modern world we live in.

The Real Witches' Craft

TWPT's New Release Book Spotlight

The Real Witches' Craft has never before been available in the US. It is the natural follow-up to West's first book, but stands on its own as a yearlong guide for developing advanced skills and techniques of effective magic. This book is very practical and "hands-on." It is filled with exercises and methods for a wide variety of magical practices and understandings. Included is information on:

• The magical elements
• Raising power with chants, trance, incense, and more
• Developing the senses
• Meditation techniques
• The power of visualization
• Divination and the sixth sense
• How to craft spells
• The tools of magic
• How to create an astral temple
• Spirit-the fifth element
• Magical timing
• Psychic self-defense

While her first book tells you about Witchcraft, including its beliefs and practices, The Real Witches' Craft reveals the practical aspects of doing magic. This is the training that a person might receive while spending his or her first year with a coven.

This is the book on Witchcraft that goes beyond simple spellcraft. For years, people have wanted "the real thing," the deeper and most powerful techniques of Witchcraft magic. Unfortunately, it has usually been doled out in small bits, often hidden away within spellbooks and "cook book" formulaic methods. Now it is all laid bare in a single, comprehensive resource. It's ideal for use as a manual for covens, too.

Kate West has been a practising Witch for over thirty years. Kate was born in 1957 and raised in Kent, since then she has travelled a fair proportion of the world, and resided in many different places. She discovered in her late teens that the path she was seeking was called Witchcraft. At around the same time her eldest brother was studying for the Priesthood of the Church of England. Kate has been a Civil Servant, Veterinary Nurse, Employment and Management Consultant before succumbing to the Mother Goddess and raising a child.. She is High Priestess of the Hearth of Hecate and has been Vice-President and Media Co-ordinator of the Pagan Federation. She is the respected author of The Real Witches Handbook and The Real Witches Kitchen and a popular speaker on the Craft. Kate first started writing about the Craft in 1995, since that time she has released 3 books on the Craft and a series of 3 booklets about Rites of Passage. In addition to her writing she also regularly speaks on the subject to a wide variety of audiences. In collaboration with Steve Paine she gave a multimedia performance called 'Colour Sound & Craft' at PantheoCon '96 at San Jose, California. This led to Kate producing a series of 6 Pathworking Tapes called 'Pagan Paths'. Kate regularly contributes articles to a growing number of Pagan and Witchcraft related publications. Kate regularly speaks at events up and down the UK. Occasionally she travels further afield, to Europe and the USA. From Pagan Conferences to Book signings to Festivals. She speaks on a wide range of topics related to the Craft, though commonly she spends most time explaining the beliefs and spirituality of the Craft. Kate also enjoys doing workshops, enabling her audience to experience some of the more practical aspects of Witchcraft.

Daven's Views

Join us here at TWPT in welcoming Daven as he shares with our readers reviews written for his own website called Daven's Journal. Daven is a Witch of long standing, a 15 year Wiccan and a 7 year Druid. His site "Daven's Journal" is moderately successful where he writes for a hobby. In his spare time, he is either being with his wife and daughter (of nearly 15 years each), or at his mundane job working on computers. He is currently working on one of four books and has two children's storybooks on Wicca available through his website."

Some are quite old and the books may even be out of print but just to keep the content continuously available. There will be one more page of these reviews once I have sorted through all of the archive pages. Enjoy these blasts from the past. Imajicka and Boudica.
